I took out one of our lesson/rental/demo stand up paddle boards which was a 9’6″ SurfTech Universal. I have to say I was surprised by how it performed… it was a blast to surf! I also took out my trusty GoPro HD Hero2 mounted to an old Gath surf helmet with the GoPro Helmet Front Mount to shoot some POV SUP surf vids. Even though it wasn’t the new GoPro Black, my old GoPro took some great little videos.

The first week we started with the bare basics of stand up paddling and kept inside the inner harbor, getting familiar with paddling and turning. Expending upon the basics we are now honing our stroke technique and paddle skills as well as extending our range to the outer harbor.

Yesterday we got out to Sand Dollar Cove just as the tide had bottomed out to be greeted by small waves breaking on the sandbar courtesy of a little mid period SE swell. The wind was light and the sun was bright so it was time to try a little SUP surfing. The waves were tiny, but perfect for the adults to put their turning and paddling skills to use SUP surfing. We ended up staying out and extra hour with those who had the time to play because it isn’t everyday that the conditions come together for a SUP surf session in Manchester!

I took this photo more then a few years ago on the beach in Malpais, Costa Rica and I titled it The Pose Of Repose which is a perfect state of being for an Aloha Friday!

Located in Manchester by-the-Sea on the North Shore of Boston, Surfari SUP & Surf is a few minutes off of Route 128 and easy to get to from anywhere from Marblehead to Melrose, Salem to Saugus, Beverly to Burlington, Rockport to Rowley, Gloucester to Georgetown, Andover to Arlington and on and on! We ended up at Black Beach in Manchester which is a couple minutes away from the store. With all that East swell we had perfect little lines pushing into the cove and the conditions were nice and clean. The waves were some of the most perfect learning waves I’ve ever seen for small kids and made her first couple of sessions magical.

The moment that it all clicked and I knew she would be a surfer was when she proudly told me she had just peed in her wetsuit and that it made her nice and toasty warm! I’m a proud surfing Papa…

I was born and grew up in Manchester but had been living the Island life for over twenty years when we moved back to town to settle our family in the Fall of 2010. We found a prime location next to the water and after a little bit of hard work opened up Surfari Stand Up Paddle & Surf in April 2011. It has been quite an exciting ride since, as neither Nicole or I had much experience in any kind of retail environment before we opened our doors. Pairing our combined strengths and past experience we were able to create a successful business doing what we love.

If you haven’t been in our store yet please come by as you might be pleasantly surprised. Yes we do carry a large selection stand up paddle boards, paddles, surfboards, bodyboards, skimboards, skateboards, wetsuits and all the related accessories, but we also have much more inside.
